The Diva Wore Diamonds (No. 7 in the series) Detective Hayden Konig has a great job in the little village of St. Germaine, North Carolina. He also has a loving wife, a fulfilling avocation as a choir director, friends, the respect of his peers, a house in the woods, a dog, a few guns, a 1962 pick-up truck, and more money than he can stuff into a feather-tick mattress. In short, he is living the Appalachian Dream. In spite of his prosperity and good fortune, he still has one ambition left to realize-that of becoming a hard-boiled, crime writer. To further that goal, he's spared no expense in buying Raymond Chandler's typewriter, his hat, and innumerable Cuban cigars. It doesn't help. St. Barnabas Day is reason for celebration The new, rebuilt church has risen like an angel food souffle and is playing host to parishioners and dignitaries alike, but when a time-capsule from 1900 is opened during the festivities, the discovery throws the whole town into a tither. Toss in a murder, a Prayer Vigil that goes horribly wrong, the return of Brother Hog, Bible School terrorists, and a Children's Choir performance of an unknown Henry Purcell masterpiece, and St. Barnabas Episcopal Church will never be the same.… (mais)

This one seemed to end much too quickly. Spending time with Hayden Konig et al. is like having the family over for breakfast. The church gets rebuilt, but they find something in the time capsule box buried under the old foundation that starts a lot of trouble for the town. ( )

Hayden Konig is police chief in sleepy St. Germaine, NC. He is also the music director and organist for St. Barnabas church. The church has just been rebuilt when the story opens after a devastating fire destroyed the 100 year old building.

As usual Hayden is writing a story "in the voice of" Raymond Chandler. Frankly he isn't much of an author but some people in the choir love the stories so he keeps writing them. You get to decide of you like them since they are part of each book.

St. Barnabas is looking for a new youth program director as well as a new rector and Hayden is doing his best to avoid being put on either committee. When the new youth director is hired she immediately wants to do programs, programs requiring the participation of most of the members of the small town. It is during one of these performances that one of the locals is killed. Now Hayden has a murder to solve as well as his regular duties.

I do enjoy these books, they are pretty quick reads with fast-paced stories and some great characters. Looking forward to the next in the series.

The 7th in the Hayden Konig mystery series. Hayden is a part-time liturgical detective, part-time choir director, and part-time cop in the small town of St. Germaine. In his spare time he attempts to write a detective novel ala Raymond Chandler. These chapter snippets are placed in the choir hymnal and are some of the most godawful, hilarious parts of the series. In this installment a time capsule from 1900 is opened and what lies within shocks the town. There is always murder and mayhem in this town but it is the antics and words the author spews from his characters’ mouths that will have you giggling between the pages. ( )

Priceless!. I laughed so hard my family thought there must be something wrong with me. An understanding of liturgy and church polity is an asset in understanding some of the humour.
I had never read a Raymond Chandler book until I read the first Schweizer book, and this led me to learn more about Chandler. ( )
