Princess Quinn has long pined for the world on the upside of the wishing well. Cam, the enchanter's apprentice, is determined to grant the Princess' wish. The only problem is that sometimes having your wish granted leads to more difficulties than you would think. Can a princess from an underground kingdom of magic ever feel at home in the modern world of high school, television and pizza?

I enjoyed this novel for its fast moving plot and entertaining characters although I did find many of the reactions of the characters to be unbelievable (even considering this is a fantasy). The only other thing that bugged me was the ambiguousness surrounding Cam and a slight feeling of discontent with the ending. However, I think the good points of this fairy tale certainly outweigh any small complaints I have. Overall this is a nice, easy read that would be great for pre-tweens and older. ( )

Great young readers novel. I read this in Jr. High, the again in High School, and even after I graduated. ( )

As a child, I adored this book. It was one of the first fantasies I read, and really opened my eyes to the genre. I haven't read it lately, and I almost don't want to - the memories are too precious to be ruined by my now well-read mind. They might not be, but it isn't worth it! ( )

Loved this book as a child, and it was probably the one that convinced me to allow love/romance as a viable plot device. Of course, for a while I had a thing for skateboard jousts. My copy is very, very worn. ( )

Princess Quinnella is quite familiar with Mandrian truths. At 15, she's still allowed to come and go as she wishes in the kingdom of Mandria, visiting Melikar the wizard and playing at magic. But she knows that as soon as she turns 16, she will become a woman. A parade of suitors will court her until she chooses one--or the king chooses one for her--then comes marriage, childbearing, and royal protocol. But Quinn isn't ready for this life of predictability. More than anything, she wants to travel to "outer earth," the world above the wishing pool. When a magical mishap sends her to Earth, Quinn gets far more than she bargained for. As she is drawn deeper into this strange new world of skateboards, Halloween dances, and pizza, danger and adolescent intrigue surround her. There's only one problem: she doesn't know how to return to Mandria, and she's not even sure she wants to!

Dian Curtis Regan's modern-day fantasy is witty and suspenseful. Minor lapses into pop culture and fashion might give the savvy contemporary reader pause--the book was begun as a short story in 1975, and was completed as a novel 20 years later. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter
