( ) Buried by Mark Billingham is the sixth police procedural in his DI Tom Thorne series set in London and in this outing Thorne has been added to a kidnap investigation team. A 16 year old boy, Luke Mullen, has been taken, and when Thorne discovers that the boy’s father is ex-policeman DC Superintendent Tony Mullen, he knows this case will be special. Teaming up with a new partner, DI Louise Porter, they find many loose threads that lead to the past. A recent hate crime muddies the water, as they zero in on Grant Freeman, a wanted criminal who has threatened Mullen in the past. As the case escalates, Thorne and Porter discover many more twists and turns to this complicated case. With excellent timing, Billingham allows the suspense to build as he shifts the point of view from character to character. This is a tale of long-hidden secrets, and present day lies. Tom Thorne is a well developed, layered character and this is his most complicated case so far. Buried is a powerful story that held my attention totally. A good, easy to read, crime novel featuring Tom Thorne & recurring characters from Mark Billinghams London crime universe. Engaging, & otherwise readable, it like most novels of its size, has a problem with pacing. Some editing would have been beneficial in places. A good plot, with twists, particularly towards the end, & easy to complete. Wouldn't read it again, nor would I necessarily recommend it. Adequate crime material, but not groundbreaking nor gripping enough to be called a classic. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica

** INCLUDES AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR ** Luke Mullen, sixteen year old son of a former, high-ranking police officer has disappeared, presumed kidnapped. While no-one quite dares to voice the fear that he could also be presumed dead, Detective Inspector Tom Thorne is brought in to beef up the squad dedicated to locating the missing boy. The first thing the team looks for is anyone with a grudge against Luke's father, a man who'd put a lot of tough villains away in his time. A list quickly emerges, but Thorne discovers that ex-DCI Tony Mullen has omitted the name of the most obvious suspect ; a man who'd once threatened him and his family, and who, after serving time for his original crime, is now the main suspect in a murder which has been unsolved for four years. Is this a simple oversight - understandable considering the trauma of his son's disappearance? Or is it something more telling? Aware that he does not have the luxury of time, Thorne searches desperately for connections and leads, but learns that secrets are as easily buried as bodies, and that assumptions are the enemy of truth.
