The Grand Duchy of Karameikos, published in 1987, was the first of the Gazetteer series of campaign settings for the classic Dungeons and Dragons game. The various nations detailed in the Gazetteer series fit together to form a region, called the Known World.

The Grand Duchy is a small, heavily forested nation with an eastern European flavour, which has been conquered and colonised by people from a culture similar to that of the Byzantine Empire. Apart from that, it's a pretty standard temperate quasi-medieval fantasy nation, with a couple of large cities and lots of smaller towns, large areas of monster infested wilderness, elven tribes etc.

The book is 64 pages long, competently written and nicely illustrated. You also get a fold-out map. The Grand Duchy is described in detail. It's not the best nor the most original campaign setting ever written, but it's pretty good, especially as a setting for low-level characters. It was one of the most popular of the Gazetteers, and several of the classic D&D modules were set here, notably the excellent B10: Night's Dark Terror. ( )
