I like this book because it is a good book to use in order to teach students about juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), a condition that they may not be previously familiar with. This is an informational book, so it includes a table of contents, foreword, glossary, and resources for teachers and parents. However, this informational book is told more like a story from the point of view of Nicole herself. This first person point of view makes the story more relatable to and engaging for students. In addition, the real, black and white photographs of Nicole in her everyday life give the reader a face to put to the text, which makes the story more powerful. This book puts an emphasis on all of the things that Nicole can do with JRA and the fact that JRA really doesn't make her that much different than any other kid. It concludes with sections on information about JRA and civil rights laws for persons with disabilities, providing more sophisticated information to supplement Nicole’s story. Overall, the big idea of this book is to teach about juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.… (mais)
