Yasmin Husein al-Jawahiri, Iraqi born writer and academic, describes in this study the impact of the comprehensive multilateral sanctions on Iraq, in particular the women of Iraq. The sanctions, imposed by the UN immediately after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990 and prolonged also after the withdrawal, lasted for almost 13 years, based on the claim that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. The 6 week bombing campain in 1991 destroyed the military and civilian infrastructure. The disruption in the supply of food, electricity and water were felt particularly by women. Also health services, education and labour participation were greatly affected (Report Ahtisaari no. S 122366, 1991).
This book, based on the analasis of 227 cases of women living in 3 different quarters of Baghdad, illustrates how sanctions, a legitimate measure under international law and considered a more humane political instrument than military force, can devastate women's lifes. As such this book is a necessary complement for policy makers to the abundant legal literature on the subject.
See the bibliography prepared by the PPL “Economic sanctions from the point of view of public and private international law : selective bibliography “ and more under the keyword “sanctions” and/or the systematic number “194” in the catalogue of the PPL.
