As a webmaster for a local Public Works web site about 10 years ago, I was yearning for something new in my web page formatting. Traditional HTML just did not offer enough. I spent lots of time reviewing other web sites for ideas. Ultimately I realized CSS offered what I was after. Then I spent time researching books to help me learn CSS.

Designing Without Tables Using CSS was one of the better books I found. Its format matched my learning style and thinking. After experimenting I finally put together a decent web site. I found the book an excellent resource.

Now in 2012, this book is probably well outdated, but if I were in need of a resource to learn the latest web page coding language, I would definitely consider other books by this publisher/author. The accompanying book, The CSS Anthology: 101 Essential Tips, Trick & Hacks, was an excellent compliment.

Tables for layout are back! Well, sort of. This book talks mostly about the Cascading Style Sheets 2 display:table property, which is usable in Internet Explorer 8. The property allows fairly easy construction of common grid-like layouts, including multiple column layouts, without resorting to floats and absolute positioning hackery. The book clearly explains how to use it, and how to gracefully degrade for IE 6 and 7. The book finishes with a glimpse at future css (only partially implemented across browsers) such as multicol, which implements dynamic flowing text across columns.
