I am a cozy mystery reader and had the opportunity to read this book which is outside of my normal niche. I would classify this book as suspense/thriller mixed with a bit of humor and the unexpected. Kay is not your normal police officer being framed for crimes she didn't commit. She has sass, humor, and her wits. Along with a little help from her friends, she experiments with many disguises and finds her inner outlaw all the while trying to find the real criminals. This is the first book in a future series of adventures that I feel readers will continue to want to read.

REVIEW: “Two minutes later I was sitting at the bar at Ditka’s Restaurant, wondering what drink went best with adrenaline and fear.” This book starts with a bang and keeps on going. Kay is a wonderful, if sometime inept, police officer. She is racing to clear her name and solve a wide-spread conspiracy. The pace is quick and the characters are lovable. Can’t wait to read more of Red Riley’s adventures. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

DESCRIPTION, NOT REVIEW: I'm sorry Miss Riley, you've got nothing left to offer. You yourself admitted that I was never going to let you live.
Bombs are going off in downtown Chicago. Caught in the middle is Kay Riley, an unassuming police officer framed for the devastation.
On the run with only her sense of humor and a few old friends to help her out, Kay faces an annoying hitman, a sexy thief, and a madman with a penchant for destruction.
Unexpectedly, Kay finds that being an outlaw agrees with her. She's not a karate expert, she can't pick a lock, and she certainly isn't a master of disguise, but Riley is stubborn, and this is her city. She's not going down without a fight!

This book is one of the most memorable of all the titles I have read over the years. I remember well the first time I read it - 20 years ago. After several years of watching, I finally found a copy to buy a few years ago and have reread it several times since. It is a sweet and gentle historical romance set around the events of Texas Independence. Of course, you probably have to be 13 when you read it the first time to truly appreciate it.
