John Henry Frederick Bacon was a British painter and illustrator. Born in Kennington, London in 1865, he was the son of the lithographer John Cardanall Bacon. Educated at the Westminster School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, he acquired a reputation as an excellent black-and-white illustrator while still in his teens. At the age of eighteen he undertook a tour of India and Burma, becoming a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy upon his return in 1889. Bacon was an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) and was awarded the MVO (Member of the Royal Victorian Order) for distinguished service to the King. He married in 1894 and had seven children. He died of bronchitis in 1914, at the age of forty-eight.
