Béaslaí emigrated to Ireland at a young age and became immersed in Nationalist organisations. He fought in both the Easter Rising of 1916 and the Irish War of Independence. A very close friend of Michael Collins, he was a strong supporter of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. In 1926 he wrote Michael Collins' first biography called "Michael Collins and the Making of a New Ireland." He is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in the same grave as Thomas Ashe and Peadar Kearney.

I purchased this book as it is quite rare and had been lovingly re-printed by the deBúrca collection. Béaslaí was one of Collins' closest friends and took it upon himself to be his official biographer and defender of his reputation in later life against challenges from others. The biography, in two volumes, is somewhat staid now but fans of Collins will still appreciate it. There is little in the way of critical analysis here of the main character, however.
