Fatal error: Call to undefined function isLitsy() in /var/www/html/inc_magicDB.php on line 425- Claire Baum, née Friedberg, was born to a Jewish family in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. She was a small child in 1939, just prior to World War II, when her family tried to leave for the USA, but were refused a visa. Her father joined the Dutch Resistance to the Nazis in 1942 and decided to split the family up in order to increase their chances for survival. Dutch Christian families hid Claire and her small sister Olga for the remainder of the war. Her parents also survived and the family was reunited after the war. In 1951, they emigrated to Canada, settling in Toronto. Claire married Seymour Baum, with whom she had three children, and worked for 25 years alongside him to build a successful plumbing and heating company. She has been active as a public speaker about her Holocaust experiences. A part of her story was included in the anthology Whispers in Hiding (2010) by Kathy Kacer and Sharon E. McKay. In 1984, almost 40 years after the end of the war, Claire received a package from a stranger in Rotterdam, containing letters, drawings, and photos left behind in her parents' house. Her memoir The Hidden Package was published in 2014 as part of the Azrieli Foundation Series of Holocaust Survivor Memoirs.
