Fascinating reading. Pleased the author shared interests and left many references to his sources. References to The Whole Earth Catalogue; Golum - Jakob Grimm made an entry in his 1808 Zeitung fur Einsiedler (Journal for Hermits), Golum to automatic - Salomon de Caus, Hortus Palatinus Garden (inspired the animated brass horse in The Canterbury Tales, and the living statue of Hermione in The Winter's Tale); James Cox's animated silver swan (which inspired Twain); stage magic; spiritualism; spirit photography; Electronic voice phenomenon; Brion Gysin, Huxley, ..this book is an interesting read about the author's own journey to penetrate things supernatural.… (mais)

I read this one in a few hours, I had already read about three-fourths of the stories within. The stories are of stranger sorts of sword & sorcery tales but also those that have been published in other collections through the years. I still enjoyed the strange often sword-proof monsters and the smug, violent heroes that populate them. As an abridged demonstration of Gary Gygax's Appendix N, I think it does the reader service.
What I really liked was the afterword citing the social limitations of fictional roots of D&D though I wished it was a longer discussion than it was. Overall, if you're not familiar with the stories I would recommend picking this one up otherwise there is not much else here. Note I did like this book and enjoyed the stories that were new(ish) to me.… (mais)

This is quite an interesting look into the music industry from a whole different angle. Digging back into the legend of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil at the crossroads all the way up to Jay-Z, it's an entertaining walk through the occult history of rock.

My chief complaint? How in the hell do you write a book about the occult and rock, and Blue Öyster Cult don't even get a mention? Makes no sense to me, and makes me wonder who else he missed.

I most admit I misunderstood what this book was about. I thought it focused on radio waves from outer space but it's about mysticism and spiritualism. There is one reference to Tesla's work, and anecdotal evidence that he was cognizant of things before they happened. I appreciate the author's Jewish perspective and his tales about Jewish mysticism including Kabbalah and the relationship to the Golem folklore. I think I would have enjoyed the book more if it focused on one topic rather trying to provide a historical overview.… (mais)
