2455 The Trial of Madame Caillaux, by Edward Berenson (read 21 Jul 1992) This is a 1992 book by a history professor at UCLA. The trial occurred in late July of 1914 (the shooting of Gaston Calmette, editor of Le Figaro,occurred March 16, 1914) and dominated the Paris press while the war loomed. She was found not guilty by a 11 to 1 vote of the jury. French law is so different from what I know it seems farcical. The book talks a lot about French attitudes in the pre-war era and really spends little time on actual courtroom events. This was worthwhile reading.… (mais)
