Tate is a weary detective that lost his SO Evelyn 40 years ago under unknown circumstances. One day the ghost of his wife appears in the kitchen and warns him about the appearance of a dangerous murderer without giving more specific clues.

Elated to see her again with more questions than answers, he arrives at an unusual crime scene where a camper's body is ripped into pieces and reassembled in the shape of a hollow egg (huh?). He dismisses an eager rookie cop named Jessup and decides to return home at once to confront Evelyn who seemingly mocks him.

She loans him a strange dagger that will be capable of killing the supernatural beast that is lurking...

Now, the plot of the story is interesting and it's always fun to begin a book with a gruelsome crime scene along with entering the mind of the protagonist. Tate seems tortured with the prospect of encountering his wife that hasn't aged one day after her own murder... But the appearance of a naked man that rushed away from the crime scene seems to complicate things...

I think some parts of the story worked very well and grammatically speaking, the book is very well written. But I just kind of feel like the writing of some scenes were a bit confusing prompting me to have to reread them more than once. The finale is sort of odd and rushed which is why I dropped the stars to three. However, for a short story it was pretty enjoyable for a quick read.

Bizarre and leaving you guessing to the very end, our unwitting protagonist is a dumb teenager that likes to make out with a girl named Laura in an old man's abandoned barn in rural Indiana. When he is caught by his parents, his father staunchly warns him to stay away because a family from Chicago had just moved there and he would be punished if he returned.

The warning obviously falls on dead ears and the dumb kid sneaks out the door that very evening but he witnesses something both incredible and horrifying. I'd love to tell the rest, but I don't want to ruin the ending. You'll just have to read it in order to find out.… (mais)

In this short story, everyone seems to be a villain in a human sort of way.

Sandy has grown fed up with her love affair with an obnoxious 21 year old stalker named Rick who demands her to divorce her work-obsessed spouse George. After realizing her mistake but being unable to confess the truth, she orders him to meet her behind the house the fateful morning her husband just purchased a new deep freezer to store meat.

You already know the ending of the story by the 2nd page, but the journey is still enjoyable. Riddled by guilt and probably going out of her mind, Sandy sees constant flashes of the distressed young man wherever she goes. George never suspects anything is amiss but one day, a neighbor asks him if he could give him some meat and he would pay it back...

The writing might not be perfect but I enjoyed reading this short story.

Fascinating vampire story! This is a refreshingly unique take on vampires, well written with engaging characters and good story telling. The final battle in the factory had me reading so fast I was going cross-eyed, I just couldn’t wait to see what happened.
I kind of wanted to slap Jerusa, the heroine. Like a typical teenager, she ignored her promise made to two people, and she ignored her ghost friend, thus causing all of this to happen in her life by involving herself in an unfolding vampire drama.
I will be reading the whole series. Excellent job!
