Richard Bird is the author of over 30 books including How to Plan a Small Garden, The Border Planner and Month-by-Month in the Garden. He has edited a number of gardening magazines and lectures widely about garden planting. He has also appeared on television and radio

Die meisten Präfixe (also erste Bestandteile eines Doppelwortes) sind Adjektive oder Adverben und beziehen sich auf die Größe oder geografische Herkunft einer Pflanze. Beispiel: actino (strahlenförmig), aniso (ungleich) oder parvi (klein). Die allgemeine Erscheinung einer Pflanze kennen wir z.B. von der Bezeichnung vulgare (gewöhnlich). Sie wurde meist an die Pflanze einer Gatttung vergeben, die zum Zeitpunkt der Namensgebung am bekanntesten war.
