My mother gave me this volume recently, and at first it pleased me as a fascinating record of her times (the 40s, though as previous reviewers have written, the techniques it shows are timeless -- or even thoroughly up-to-the-minute.) I then discovered that it was a priceless resource for my work as a translator, especially for the chapter 'Material Evidence' which details Fabric Selection, words used to Describe Fabrics, Fabric Weaves, and a Textile Chart that goes from Albatross (a soft, lightweight wool) to Voile (sheer cotton, silk or rayon fabric), in a much more comprehensive glossary than any I'd found before. That PLUS the amazing range of clear instructions and tips to take us step-by-step through garment sewing, constructing useful and whimsical accessories, or sewing for the home to our hearts' content! A more valuable guide than many manuals being published today, 70 years later.… (mais)
