Perché questo libro si intitola "A Source Book"? Semplice: perché raccoglie articoli su pi greco, generalmente riguardo ai modi in cui può essere calcolato. Gli articoli spaziano per quattro millenni, dalla traduzione della prima formula per calcolare pi greco che conosciamo, tratta dal papiro di Rhind, fino ai giorni nostri. C'è anche un brano di Umberto Eco dal Pendolo di Foucault, ma è un'eccezione. Il testo è ovviamente nato per essere di riferimento e non letto, anche perché molti degli articoli sono davvero tecnici: e va già bene che in questa edizione Viète e Huygens sono stati tradotti dal latino. Secondo me però si sarebbero potute evitare alcune ripetizioni di temi, che non portano grandi informazioni aggiuntive. Una nota per chi si lamenta che non si arriva mai in fondo ai libri: a pagina 678 c'è scritto che Tolomeo ha approssimato pi greco con 3 + 8/60 + 30/3600, 3,141666... che è il perimetro di un 360-gono regolare inscritto in un cerchio. Ovviamente non può essere così, visto che l'approssimazione è per eccesso.… (mais)

A fairly thin paperback, but not as popularized (dumbed down) from Borwein's very technical-looking earlier books as I had hoped, the inclusion of cartoons notwithstanding. To follow everything, one really needs to have a math degree. Still, I think I gleaned some appreciation of the very sophisticated ways in which computers are now helping in some pure-math research.
