I was expecting this to be a serious and well presented book. There is a lot of interesting facts and analysis within the text but in my view it is marred by lots of silly quips and jokes that are unnecessary. The tables are substandard, presented in different shades of grey and there is a science fiction style chapter on census 2121. The blurb says that findings are collected 'into a wonderfully written and entertaining book'. Sadly, I disagree and had hoped for something shorter and illuminating.… (mais)

The ONS has been charged with recording the minutiae of life in the UK through its decennial census and other data collection. Here that data is dissected and changes throughout time are considered in social context. It is a fascinating story of social change and its effects on everyday life.
