Bookbox - ABC VBB; good mystery set in the British Virgin Islands, which I didn't know much about. Hannah is a dive detective with the Denver police. She is given a leave of absence and hired by the Duvall family to investigate their son's death diving in BVI in a wreck. They don't believe it's accidental, and as the book unfurls, it keeps your attention and keeps you guessing.

The story is told from the alternating point of view of a dog and the youngest member of her human family. The young girl believes she is just playing with the dog but the dog shares with the reader how the child's actions are actually uncomfortable to her. It has a great message to help young children to understand an animal's point of view and appropriate ways to play with their pets. My five year old enjoyed the story.

As an adult, I think the story would have been just as powerful and maybe even clearer if it had been told without the rhyming verses. The rhymes were awkward and the rhythm was uneven making it uncomfortable to read aloud. This is my reason for three stars instead of four.

I received a copy of this books part of Librarythings first reads program in exchange for my honest review.

The second in the Underwater Investigations Series. Hannah's plan is to move to the BVI, but first she gets to do one last dive in murky water in Denver. I'm not sure why the whole scene was in there, but, it was interesting.

Then we and Hannah go down to BVI and that's when the novel goes into high gear. On her first day she gets assigned a missing person case. Of course, this is a mystery, so it doesn't stay that way too long and Hannah starts in on a case that has many many twists and turns.

It was a fairly typical mystery with a bit of thriller thrown in near the end.

It was the characters that were great. There were the characters we'd met in the last book like Peter and James. But t hen there was a new character, a Deputy named Jimmy, who was sorta paired up with Hannah, and Elyse, another person who lives at the same landing Hannah does. They both have such rich stories and their characterization just made me want to get more from them in the story.

All in all I really liked the novel.

This book was ok. I read it to my children, right after we adopted a kitten. I was hoping they would glean some wisdom on how to treat the cat...but the back and forth nature of the storytelling was difficult for them to understand.
