Teresa Brennan was born in Melbourne, Australia. She earned degrees from the University of Sydney, the University of Melbourne, and Cambridge University. She became a noted feminist philosopher and social-political theorist. Her first book was Interpretation of the Flesh: Freud and Femininity (1992), followed by History After Lacan (1993). In her last and best-known book, The Transmission of Affect (2004), she argued that the emotions and energies of one person or group can be absorbed by or can enter directly into another. She moved to the USA and was named Schmidt Distinguished Professor of Humanities at Florida Atlantic University. She died in Florida in 2003.
