Castoff Children redefines the meaning of what and who constitutes 'family'. This book particularly touched my heart because even tho the year is 1850, the setting is in Boston. The land that has my heart.
Unwanted kids trying to eke out some semblance of life, find each other on the streets and form their own sort of family. Bracing against winter weather and attitudes of disgust the children ultimately DO learn that goodness does exist. Until a point when a chance meeting changes their lives they lived with despair, with hopes and dreams built and dashed. Illness, starvation and dirt is what they knew....
I remember my mum telling us to wash up and brush our hair cuz we looked like 'ragamuffins'.
Castoff children is true heart-touching book about ragamuffins.
