The first section, 82 pp., covers history, materials, and techniques. Chapter one is half that, providing an overview of the history of goldwork embroidery, primarily in England. Chapter 2 is seven pp. on metal threads. Chapter 3 is ten pages on other materials, equipment, and preparation techniques. Chapter 4 is fourteen pages on goldwork techniques. The second section of 110 pp. are specific projects: Contemporary Jewel (laid work and Burden Stitch) , Circle of Hearts (gold kid leather and purl), Spray of Flowers (colored metal threads, couching, cutwork, ship work, and S-ing), Silver Flower (purls), White Poppy (couched threads and purls), Horus Eye (purls, spangles, and plate), Medallion (S-ing, cutwork, purls), Ornamental Fan (bullions, purls, spangles, pearls and beads), Portrait of a Woman (purl and Jap gold), Basket of Flowers (purls and passing threads), Vine of Flowers (padded purl, twist), Japanese Landscape (chipping, cutwork over string, gold kid, laid work) , Byzantine Angel (purls, spangles, beads), Cornucopia (purls, spangles), and Memories of Russia (colored kid, purls, Jap gold). The book concludes with a Bibliography and list of Suppliers.

Lots of beautiful color photos, as one expects from a book like this. The history section is clear and concise. The technique section covers how to dress a frame as well as how to stitch the gold threads. The projects show clearly how to create the designs shown, which are generally modern in style, though some are inspired by historical patterns. The suppliers list has 4 places in the UK, 3 in Australia, 1 in New Zealand, and 2 in the US (including Hedgehog Handworks).

Definitely recommended for the first section, somewhat less recommended for the projects section (since most were not to my taste). On the other hand, the instructions are clear and specific.

Contains a very nice historical overview of goldwork from ancient times through the modern revival of this particular artform, as well as a nice overview of materials and methods. Highly recommended for persons looking to try out this kind of embroidery.
