The author describes how helping a survivor recover from trauma must be addressed through cultural variables and their intersections: economic situation, gender, disability, migration status, race and ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation. She argues that a culture-blind or universal approach is a disservice to the survivor. She shows how to use the cultural variables to view the themes of recovery (safety, self-care, trust, shame and self-blame, memories, mourning losses, anger, body image, sexuality, coping strategies and thriving). Additionally she provides activity ideas and affirmations to aid in recovery, such as journal writing, movement, art, music, spirituality, drama, social support, activism and nature.
