Jim Butcher read his first fantasy novel when he was seven years old-- the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. By the time he turned eight, he'd added the rest of the Narnia books, the Prydain Chronicles, every book about Star Wars he could find, a great many Star Trek novels and the Lord of the Rings to his count.

So he was pretty much doomed from the start.

Love of fantasy, his personal gateway drug, drew him toward a fairly eclectic spread of interests: horseback riding (including trick riding, stunt riding, drill riding, and competitive stunt racing), archery, martial arts, costuming, music and theater. He played a lot of role- playing games, a lot of fantasy-based tactical computer games, and eventually got into live-action roleplay where players beat each other up with boffer weapons.

So, really, he can fly his nerd flag with pretty much anyone, and frequently does.

He took up writing to be able to produce fantasy novels with swords and horses in them, and determinedly wrote terrible fantasy books until, just to prove a point to his writing teacher, he decided to take every piece of her advice; fill out outlines and worksheets, and design stories and characters just the way she'd been telling him to do for about three years. He was certain that once she saw what hideous art it produced, she would be proven wrong and repent the error of her ways. The result was the Dresden Files, which sure showed *her*.

She has not yet admitted her mistake and recanted her philosophy on writing.

Jim has performed in dramas, musicals, and vocal groups in front of live audiences of thousands and on TV. He has performed exhibition riding in multiple arenas, and fallen from running horses a truly ridiculous number of times. He was once cursed by an Amazon witch doctor in rural Brazil, has apparently begun writing about himself in the third person, and is hardly ever sick at sea.

He also writes books occasionally.

Jim stands accused of writing the Dresden Files and the Codex Alera. He's plead insanity, but the jury is still out on that one. He lives in Missouri with his wife, romantic suspense and paranormal romance writer Shannon K. Butcher (who is really pretty and way out of his league), his son, and a ferocious guard dog.

"Speak for yourself," Murphy said. "I just gave my last grenade to a Valkyrie and ordered her to blow up a kraken. I'm having a ball."

Battle Ground is the seventeenth entry in The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. The title of the book is literal. If you don't enjoy action and battle scenes, you're going to hate this book. Luckily I'm an action junkie and enjoyed every minute of it.

So much happens in this installment that I'm assuming is to set up for the remainder of the series. And I thought Changes changed everything! This is even more fundamental of a shift in the story now that humanity, at least in Chicago, knows some of the truth. The story was also was one heck of an emotional roller coaster beginning to end. I think just about every secondary character, and many of the bad guys, make an appearance in this book. I still can't believe Butcher did that to Muprhy. At least she got to have some fun first. Nor did have any clue as to Marcone and all he's been up to. And Butters being MVP in the battle. Who would've ever expected that from where Butters started? Also, Harry has had the Winter mantle long enough that he's starting to think a little like a fae.

My copy also contained a short story titled Christmas Eve about Harry and Maggie on their first Christmas together. It was heartwarming and adorable.

It feels odd to be caught up on the series after taking my time reading it. Yet now that I'm caught up, it's going to be fun to start speculating and see if I can guess anything that's heading Harry's way next correctly.

I love Harry Dresden as a character. He is comedic, witty and he deals with magic which is always a bonus in my fantasy driven mind. I also love the story line so far. I love crime shows and this has the same kind of feel too it

I should have remembered when I unearthed this in a shelf of TBR books that I hadn't enjoyed the other volume that I've read from this series. This collection of short stories reinforced that impression. I think perhaps the compulsory humour in life and death situations becomes a little grating at times but the main issue that otherwise good stories are spoiled by 'dodgy' parts, such as the one told from the viewpoint of Dresden's vampire half brother who kills the female villain through the ability of his inner demon to inflict death by multiple orgasms - so it's OK then as she enjoyed it!. And most of the characters are basically cardboard cutouts with little to differentiate them.

The best story for me is the last one, which takes place after the novel 'Changes', and is a massive spoiler so I won't go into details, but it stars Murphy, female detective friend of Dresden's. The fact that he didn't appear in it and I enjoyed it best of all is rather telling. So a 2 star 'OK' rating and I won't be reading any more of these.

Having heard favourable reports of this series and seeing book 2 in a charity shop I decided to give it a try. However, I found it boring in parts and frustrating. The numerous characters are all cardboard cutouts apart from Harry himself, and he spends a lot of the time mentally beating himself up, often while being beaten up by various adversaries. The treatment of women is especially bad - they are all highly attractive but with no real characterisation other than the odd bit of feistiness, apart from Murphy the police woman who seems to be Mrs Angry the whole time. Only Dresden himself has a sense of humour and that is often forced, making wisecracks in the least likely situations, especially when it is guaranteed to drive various villains who have him at their mercy into a killing frenzy.

The story revolves around several types of werewolf - which Dresden describes for Murphy in a report fairly early on in the story. I couldn't help thinking that this might confuse some readers and certainly would a TV audience if this was adapted (having heard there was a TV series based on these books). Quite a lot of the book is devoted to copious descriptions of blood and gore as the various types of werewolf go on the rampage. I also found it highly unbelievable that the main character survives being constantly shot/beaten etc especially when he is at the mercy of a biker gang who channel spirits of rage and are supposedly a type of werewolf that does not change from human form. His ability to function despite days of such treatment stretched my disbelief to the snapping point.

The more interesting aspect of the book was Dresden's familiar spirit, Bob, who inhabits a skull, and a demon he conjures to try to get more information about who is carrying out the murders. But I found it very odd that he would give away one of his names - and apparently has already done so in book 1 - when to give the demons his whole name will put him entirely at their mercy. Especially for information which could have been found out on the internet - granted that magic in this book causes failure of computer and other electrical equipment, but he could have asked his girlfriend Susan, the reporter, to research it for him. It is also very convenient that he early on makes two potions that he just happens to need later on.

So I would rate this as an OK 2 stars at best and am not planning to seek any more of the series.
