Quite subtle and touching. A bit odd that it takes a fling squirrel to help people get to know each other, but, somehow, in the context of this book, believable

This is a (kind of surprisingly) soothingly eerie picture book! It has darkish moments where Sister Strange buries old bones, swims in slimy bogs, and peers in the readers window, but all these elements that could be slightly scary for a kid are made enjoyable with the rhyme pattern, lovely art, and comfy forest ending. The only thing that actually super creepy is the illustration of the bear's face- DAMN. That bear looks soulless and I don't like it...

I found this book to be a perfect combination of silliness and odd characters with a treatise on the cynicism of young people. I found the story of a young cynic taking charge of a superhero squirrel to be fresh and original. While the author is not very subtle about giving Flora reasons to hope and to love, I cannot help but leave this book feeling wonderful. One of my favorite Newbery winners.… (mais)

And now this has won the 2014 Newbery Medal! I'm surprised because it relies quite a bit on the illustrations, but I'm not surprised at all that Kate DiCamillo has another award to add to her collection. It's great to see the Newbery committee pick such a fun, strange book. Though DiCamillo is definitely a Newbery darling, Flora & Ulysses is definitely not a typical Newbery book.… (mais)
