This is a very interesting story idea and as a cherry on top you'll get a f/f pairing and a genderqueer side character as well. Yay!

City of hope and ruin jumps right into the story and at first I was a little bit confused (there are some magical crystals and they... do stuff?). So more worldbuilding would be great. But I found my way into it and both worlds are really different from each other and really interesting as well.

I came to like both Briony and Theosophy on their own, their relationship? Not so much. It left me cold, because it didn't really make sense and was very rushed. The ending is rushed as well. I was like ''It's over? Huh???''

So some minor things could be done better, but it still makes a very interesting read.

*spoilers!*

I just finished reading this book and I can honestly say it's the best book I've read in years. At first I thought the back and forth between Theosophy's POV and Briony's POV would be a little difficult to follow, but I adjusted to it quickly. I loved Theo and Briony's first interaction, neither of them knowing what the heck was going on. Then in subsequent interactions they figured out what was going on and learned more about each other and their different worlds.

For a long time Briony is the only one in town that really takes the Scarred seriously, that really views them as a threat, so I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly Jael came around after the Scarred got to Carys. It was very interesting to slowly learn more and more about Theo and Briony's worlds and how they are connected. I literally cried out in joy when Briony admitted to Theo that she wanted to kiss her. Such a tender scene.

As I learned more and more about Theo's life and her connections to Solvent, Astro, and the dean, I started having more and more questions in my mind. When I found out that the dean had taken Theo's gadget, the one that let her communicate with Briony, I knew something wasn't right. I knew right then that the dean was bad news, although that wasn't revealed until later, and even then Theo didn't want to believe it.

Everything seemed to happen so fast after that. Briony found tons of papers about the City and learned that the anchor had been right under her nose the whole time, Theo got a group to go with her through the sewers to get to the dean and Solvent supposedly got taken by a monster... And then the attack on Briony's home and Solvent's betrayal. That was huge. And the end... Briony stopping the anchor and Theo going through to Briony's land and they finally got to touch each other and kiss, and it ended on such a hopeful note!

I loved this book. I may go straight back and read it again, to pick up clues and things that I might have missed the first time around. I recommend this book to *anyone* regardless of what types of books they like to read. I'm not a fantasy reader by any means but this novel is gold.

Ever wonder what it is like when authors work with their characters? They have to know their personalities, their pasts and their emotions. When Margery encounters a magical writing community known as The Spork Room, she finds a solution to the pirate story she's writing. That solution is the Door, a portal the writers can go through to see their stories come to life. Margery doesn't get one of the other writers to stand watch when she goes in to get a look at her character Cass. Soon a malevolent force is released and the worlds within the Door become unstable and start to collapse. Margery needs to find a solution and get out with only Cass and the unflappable Someone, a character of many talents used by the writers in distress.

Hidden Worlds is a quick, entertaining read that will especially appeal to those who enjoy parallel worlds

A very dear friend of mine, a member of The Spork Room, wrote this novel. I first read it in bits and pieces as she posted it on the forums, and I was beside myself with excitement when I found out she'd self-published it. This is an amazing novel, completely one-of-a-kind, and it's even more awesome in that it's based on the antics of The Spork Room, the writing community we belong to.

In this novel, a writer named Margery stumbles onto a magical community of writers, a place that you can find whenever you need to, no matter where you live, and you can always find other writers there. Part of the magic of The Spork Room is "The Door", a magical door that can help you with your plots/novels by actually taking you to meet your own characters. Margery breaks a serious rule when she goes into The Door with no one to watch over it for her, and The Door destablizes. Margery is stuck in an imaginary land with her own main character, and they are being persued by a black nothingness called The Dark. The adventures Margery and Cass must go through to escape The Dark and return The Door to normal are nothing short of awesome. I don't usually like fantasy, but this novel will remain among my favorites for a long time, I'm sure.… (mais)
