About the Author

Truman Capote, 1924 - 1984 Novelist and playwright Truman Streckfus Person was born in 1924 in New Orleans to a salesman and a 16-year-old beauty queen. His parents divorced when he was four years old and was then raised by relatives for a few years in Monroeville. His mother was remarried to a mostrar mais successful businessman, moved to New York, and Truman adopted his stepfather's surname. He attended Greenwich High School and never went to college. When he was 17, Capote's formal education ended when he was employed at The New Yorker magazine. He belived he did not need to go to college to be a writer, since he was writing seriously since age 11. Capote's first novel was "Other Voices, Other Rooms" (1948), which told the story of a boy growing up in the Deep South. "The Grass Harp" (1951) is about a young boy and his elderly cousin discovering that some compromise is necessary for people to live together in a community and was adapted to screen in 1996. The play "The House of Flowers" (1954) is a musical set in a West Indies bordello. Capote then wrote, "Breakfast at Tiffanys" (1958), which tells the story of how Holly Golightly goes to New York seeking happiness. Capote became preoccupied with journalism and, sparked by the murder of a wealthy family in Holcomb, Kansas, began interviewing the locals to recreate the lives of the murderers and their victims. The research and writing for this novel, "In Cold Blood" (1966), took six years for him to complete. Other works of Capote's include the classic "A Christmas Memory" (1966), which is an autobiographical account of a seven-year-old boy, his cousin, and an eccentric old lady, "Music for Chameleons" (1981), which is a collection of short pieces, interviews, stories and conversations that were published in several magazines, and "One Christmas" (1982). On August 26, 1984 in Los Angeles, Truman Capote died of liver disease complicated by phlebitis and multiple drug intoxication. Published after his death were "Conversations With Capote" (1985) and "Answered Prayers: The Untitled Novel" (1986). (Bowker Author Biography) mostrar menos

Honestly didn’t think I’d enjoy this, but I did.

Plot points jumped about quite a bit, it was nothing to expect from a 100 pager.

However the Doc and Lulumae storyline felt randomly placed but as it gave some context to how and why Holly is Holly, it was reasonable. It just probably could have been slightly more expanded upon.

Sad near the end with the whole cat stuff. I liked that cat lol.

Didn’t read the extra three stories because I just didn’t feel like it. Might do at a later date… (mais)

Lovely language, lovely style, but it misses the balance. I have the idea that it was not finished yet. I think it is dearing to claim that it was his first novel, as he did not publish it.

This is the book that seems to set the standard for the true crime genre, so perhaps my expectation was too high. The book’s construction is like many novels, with frequent shifts of scene to follow different characters and their narrative journey. Capote tells the story of the murder of four members of a Kansas family by alternately following the family’s last day, the journey of the murderers toward their crime, their travels following the murders, the investigation, the trial, and the time on death row awaiting the execution date. Capote seems particularly sympathetic toward one of the murderers, Perry Smith, to the point that it ought to raise questions about his objectivity. There are no footnotes or endnotes for readers to verify the facts of the case.… (mais)

Reason read; American author Challenge 2024. Truman Capote.
Books read by Truman Capote include; In Cold Blood, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, A Christmas Memory, and now The Grass Harp.

It is set in the south and involves an orphan boy and two elderly sisters. It was published 1951. It is about family conflict, community, and the need to get back to life and let grievances go.

I didn’t mind the book but I also did not fully engage with it so I am going to call it so-so book. It was made into a musical and a play.

As Collin, 16 years old, stops to listen to the Indian grass whispering in the wind, below the cemetery on the hill, his 60-year-old aunt, Dolly, with whom he lives, tells him it is the grass harp telling the stories of those who are dead.
