The lead character, Cartey tells the story of his summer exploits with his best friend Troop, and his dog King. Set in a simpler time, the boys spend their days roaming their small Kansas town just being boys. The mischief they find is punishable but innocent by today’s standards. With the help of the most unpleasant man in town, they are able to turn their team around and learn a lot about baseball. There are several lessons for Carley to learn, especially when it comes to making assumptions about people. The lessons are great for every kid to learn, no lectures involved. It is a fun way to do it. Carley learns, among other things, that girls and geeky kids can play baseball and unpleasant old men may have hearts of gold and good reason for being miserable. By the end of the story he and his team have gotten revenge on every one who’s wronged them and all is right with the world. This book is appropriate for all kids, especially pre-teen boys.
