The drawings are cool. Claveloux works in a plethora of styles, all of which are intriguing in their own right, especially with her use of color, but the writing isn't anything ground-breaking. I wouldn't put it far as to say that this wasn't an inspiration for other comic-artists. All in all, it's got some fun pictures. I like it, worth a read.

French comics from the 60s, about fantastical happenings to ordinary people. Not enough narrative payoff for me.

An unadventurous if intermittently charming collection of erotic fairytales from Charles Poucet (who's he? Perhaps a pseudonym), dramatically lifted by exquisite illustrations from Nicole Claveloux. The actual contes (the title is literally ‘Tales of Beans and Acorns’, but with overt anatomical connotations in French) are nothing to get excited about, but Claveloux uses the rural fantasy setting to build a Rabelaisian, even Boschian, sense of earthy over-exuberance.

Claveloux is generally known for a bright, almost psychedelic colouring style – she is often talked of as a disciple of Heinz Edelmann, the German illustrator behind The Beatles' Yellow Submarine animation – but here she shows herself a complete master of compositions dominated instead by their gradations of dark shading. Sometimes this is for Gothic effect, but otherwise it just gives a general sense of chiaroscuro candlelight which evokes some preindustrially libidinous once-upon-a-time.

A couple more forthright examples:

Claveloux's OTT polymorphous perversity is kind of superb. If you cut her stuff out, hung it up, and discarded the accompanying text, it wouldn't be the craziest thing.
