This book describes the experiences of William Raymond Morley, manager of the Maxwell Land Grant and Railroad Company in the 1870's – and railroad builder in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Sonora, Mexico between 1869 and 1883. Morley's differences with the Santa Fe Ring and the part he played in their political defeat are also covered. The Morley story is recounted by Norman Cleaveland, grandson of W. R. Morley While this is the only book to focus on Morley' s career, Satan's Paradise and No Life for a Lady by Agnes Morley Cleaveland (Morley' s daughter and Norman Cleaveland's mother) cover many of the same experiences described in The Morleys.
