Linda Lucas, who was born on 13 September in Rio, Brazil but grew up in sunny South Florida, USA, learned to tell stories at an early age. When she and her true-life hero married, Mr. Linda Sankpill, they moved to five cities in seven years! They eventually settled down, and Linda began her first career as a stockbroker and certified financial planner in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. After her mother had a disabling stroke, Linda and her husband moved to southern California to be nearby, and there Linda began her writing career. After her mother's passing, Linda and her husband moved back to South Florida and now live near the Florida Keys.

Linda jumped at the chance to change careers to write for Silhouette Books back in 2002. She's appeared on the Waldenbooks bestseller list many times. To date, her novels have been translated into more than sixteen languages, sold in over twenty-two countries and have won numerous awards, including the 2007 Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Award for Shadow Force. Adding suspense to her emotional love stories has taught her a lot about the looking deep to find the truth that lies within us all. She's found that taking a journey to the truth can be one of the most challenging voyages in life. Though her life is crammed with writing projects, she manages to find time for family, reading on the beach, boat riding and her favorite hobby—shopping! She has a secret passion for NASCAR and roots for her favorite drivers whenever she gets the chance!

This was fine - I enjoyed the first in the series more, and Jenna (the Plot Moppet) was a LOT more irritating in this book than the last. She mellowed a bit (though I'm not sure how believably), but she definitely wasn't a bonus factor.

It was also interesting (while also irritating) to see how the sheriff (who previously seemed to be stuck in a difficult situation but doing his job) was seen differently by Travis (who was not in law enforcement like his older brother Sam and who had to stay to deal with the consequences). But I was hoping that there would be a bit more on the through-mystery surrounding the family's missing sister Cami, and there just wasn't.

Travis was the "had to grow up too soon and take responsibility for everyone" brother, and while he was pushing back against his acknowledged need to be in control all the time, I'm not sure that Summer was really what he needs.

Summer has a tragic backstory involving an unfortunate marriage, a mob war and the death of her infant child - which she had to spend years as an in-patient to help overcome. I'm just not sure her drive to find the man who got away was as clear and compelling (nor resolved satisfactorily) as it needed to be.

I'll probably read the next as I'm guessing we'll get more insight into Cami's case with Gage, the PI brother (who doesn't come across well in this installment, to be honest), but on the strength of the first, not this one.

The Short Version:
Sam Chance, a US Marshal responsible for Witness Protection, bonded with Grace Baker and her baby boy while guarding them before she testified against notorious cartel leader Jose Serrano - the man who kidnapped her, murdered her parents and assaulted her for years. Now that she is away from Witness Protection, trying to live a normal life with her child, Sam tracks her down, saves her from cartel goons and spirits her off to his hometown ranch to protect her among his family.

There is a LOT of family trauma (his & hers) that is largely unresolved - especially on his side, which I assume is a throughline as sequel-bait. I found it quite questionable that the two of them would be able to form a healthy relationship without more time for her to heal, but at least he acknowledges in text that she will need help.

A bit darker than I expected, but good people win out and find love in the end. Enjoyable.

A feel good story. Not perfect, but a nice warm and slightly corny romance. Perfect for lifting the spirits.

This finishes the series. I loved them all...though this was the only one from the woman's perspective. :)
