Wearing her precious gold locket Serilda sets off for her first day of school. Encountering a dirty ragged man beating a boney, lame sorrel mare, she impulsively trades her only possession of value, the locket, for the horse. After much care, the mare becomes a valuable and much beloved member of the family.
