Based on the old spiritual written by African American pianist and composer, Margaret Bonds, "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands". New lyrics, first and last use "we". In the middle "he" and "she" and many natural elements - and towns and cities. CD included and score included. Song is followed by information on each element and ways to protect each one. followed by "Ways to Reduce Global Warming".

"The Great Race" is a beautiful retelling of the Chinse zodiac story. In order to find a way to measure time, The Jade Emperor decides to have a race and the first twelve animals to cross the river will have a year named after them. This is also a story of how cats and rats came to be enemies. I like the simple, colorful, and bold illustrations in this book and I think they would appeal to students as well. I also like that each animal was given a character attribute which helped them cross the river. I think this would be a great book to celebrate Chinese New Year.… (mais)

I read this tale adapted from a Hans Christian Andersen story to my 6-year-old and 8-year-old. We've read quite a few of his stories, but we weren't familiar with this one, so I was ready to dig in knowing that it would probably be an emotional roller coaster.

The story focuses on a little fir tree who at first isn't appreciating his circumstances and wanted more out of life. Seasons progress, plot progresses, and the (spoiler: eventually dead) tree has a change of heart.

My kids enjoyed it.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free digital review copy.
