4404. West Point A Bicentennial History, by Theodore J. Crackel (read 18 Jan 2008) This is the story of West Point from before its founding in 1802 till 2002. It is told straight-forwardly, with considerable emphasis on what was taught and disputes over the curriculum. The accounts of how the Civil War affected the institution, and how blacks were treated, and women (who began attending after 1975) are full of interest. Some of the detail about buildings put up and razed, and the continual disputes of what should be taught is of lesser interest, but I found the book pretty consistently holding my attention and interest.… (mais)
