A obra é uma discussão de teses: a do autor e a de Raymond Brown. A divergência fundamental entre ambas reside na cronologia do Evangelho de Pedro e dos Evangelhos canónicos: anterior e fonte dos canónicos, como defende Crossan; posterior e dependente deles, como defende Brown?
Esse posicionamento relativo é importante, pois as conclusões diferentes a que ambos chegaram dependem dela. É que o antijudaísmo tanto pode tr influenciado as alterações da escrita das PN (Crossan); como ser essa escrita a origem do antijudaísmo (Brown).
Todo o livro é uma separação da História lembrada, das profecias historicizadas e ainda da propaganda confessional. Obra crítica, portanto, não só da obre de referência de Raymond Brown, mas também das próprias fontes.
