There wasn't much to mark this book as special, really. It had some interesting thoughts on our relationship with nature and homesteading, but the organization of the book felt as meandering as a chicken scratching at the ground. Toward the latter half of the book the author started losing her focus from the Way of the Hen into a general disorder of new age themed sentiments that didn't mesh with the message and detracted from her ability to connect on a wide scale.

One nice note is that for some reason my two year old son loved when I would read this to him. He didn't understand the words much, but he was always asking for the "bawk-bawk book". For that reason alone this will bring a smile to my face whenever I think of it.… (mais)

I love everything about this book. I picked it up on a whim just thinking that I love anything that ties in my love of gardening and being close to the earth. This book is beautifully written. It has practical ideas for gardening or being more environmentally conscious. But more than anything, it's very inspirational. I love how the author talks about her love of gardening and the earth. You can feel, through her words, her connections to everything around her and how they move her life. It moved me to not just take care of the earth, but to feel like part of the earth; to be part of the systems and rhythms of everything around us and through that to be more conscious of our impact on the planet and quality of our lives.… (mais)
