This was probably an amazing book when it was published more than one hundred years ago. Borrowing plot styles from Scott, the author retells the classic struggle of Xerxes invasion of Greece leading up to Thermopylae, Salamis, and Platea. Seen through the eyes of a fictional Athenian, it weaves the fictional love and honor restored with the historical characters. It was then seen through a Victorian prism, not the romantic views of Scott and Dumas. So a pale imitation, but given those constraints I can see why it was likely to have been popular then - but again I can see why it is justifiably obscure now.… (mais)

I know it's probably less fancy than the dry history, but I really liked the way Davis describes all the aspects of the medieval life. Granted, most of the attention was given to the Baron and his family, but information is given about the lower classes. The book was very readable, yet conveyed a lot of information. The author even gives excerpts and pictures from original sources while weaving them into the fictional story of the book.
