Blackwork is a form of embroidery that goes back to the Tudors and possibly even earlier.

This book gives a brief history of the subject and a good assortment of patterns in both old and new styles. The patterns include Celtic and Islamic inlfunces as well as flowers, leaves and geometric designs.

There's a section on developing your own designs, but I didn't find this particularly useful. However, the instructions on how to stretch and mount your work are very clear and helpful.

The only real weakness of the book is that some of the patterns are hard to interpret. Just because a design is stitched on dark blue fabric, does not mean that the pattern has to be printed on a dark blue background where the grid lines (in black) are almost impossible to see.

Likewise, when a pattern has several shades of green, representing these exactly on the pattern makes it very hard to distinguish them. Using exaggerated shades on the pattern would have made it much easier to work out which part of the pattern is supposed to be worked in DMC 469 and which in DMC 791 - on the printed page, they look identical to me.
