Unique first hand account of life at sea in the mid 1800's when sail was giving way to steam. The whale industry was beginning to decline as petroleum replaced whale oil. Steel ships were replacing wooden ships and great changes were occurring in manufacturing. A well written experience of life at sea for sailors at that time.
