Athens 332 BC - a city uneasy under the sway of the Macedonian Alexander the Great, now fighting the King of Persia for control of the East. In this time of fresh ambition and furtive discontent, an eminent citizen is brutally murdered.
Young Philemon, an exile formerly guilty of manslaughter, is accused of the bizarre homicide. In his absence his cousin and nearest male relative, 23-year-old Stephanos, must conduct Philemon's defense and attempt to clear his family's name of this bloody murder.
Stephanos seek help from Aristotle, his former teacher... and Aristotle turns Detective.

Two very separate strands to this very quick review: Doody's work is well researched and the book is well worth reading; HOWEVER, the paper used by HarperCollins is not much better than newsprint. I have several books in my collection printed during wartime austerity (and with the Government marking within to show it) which were obviously on poor quality paper. Well, the paper in this 1997 printing is already brown and feeling delicate - something that the wartime volumes are not. And I bought this new as a sealed copy upon publication. The work printed thereon is first rate, however.… (mais)
