This book may be 35 years old, but in many ways its insights into the Man of Steel are just as valid today. Yes some of the historical essays have been superseded by later research, but it’s in other areas where this collection surprises.

There are essays looking at the Superman mythos from angles such as theology, politics, physics, immigration and more.

There’s also some honest insights into what it means to be a creator charged with bringing life to Superman. The most surprising and revealing to me being the late Denny O’Neil’s thoughts on why he felt his now iconic “No more kryptonite” storyline was a failure and why he wasn’t suited to write Superman.

More modern Superman creators could do with reading many of the observations and insights presented here to remind themselves just who Kal-El, the Last Son of Krypton, really is and what he stands for.
