Tonke Dragt was born and spent most of her childhood in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). In 1942, she and her mother and sisters were interned in a Japanese prison camp, where she discovered that she could "escape" by inventing stories. After World War II, she moved with her family to the Netherlands. She became an art teacher, and her first book was published in 1961.

A young man jeopardizes a comfortable life of rank and position already determined for him as he decides to break the rules to go on an elusive quest. There are elements of the simplified monomyth recognizable in the storyline. Our young protagonist‘s adventure is straightforward, namely to deliver a letter. The long and arduous journey is fraught with danger and from the very start he has to make hard choices. As with any good adventure there is conflict, the main character makes friends and enemies. The author does not dwell on in depth character description and histories but instead focuses on the flow of the narrative. There is no unnecessary violence and that which exists is merely hinted at. Sexuality is non-existent and romance, again, is just hinted at
Facit: A great book for the age group between 12-16.

At first glance, this book looks like a collection of short stories, but it is a novel that pulls everything together, from humble beginnings, to double-challenges for our two heroes. That’s the strong tension that pulls the whole story together—will they be heroes? What will they choose? Will they stay true to each other?
It all begins when twin boys are born to a poor cobbler and his wife.
“We don’t have any money for christening gifts,” said their parents, “but we’ll still give them something. They shall each have a puppy, a kitten and a pigeon. Don’t we make a lovely family?”
A warm and surprisingly twisty tale!

What a great book! I loved Tiuri. So many great characters. It is a big chunk for a children's book, but it's a fast and engaging read. If you missed this as a kid, I recommend picking it up now
