About the Author

Rene Dubos was a famous microbiologist, as well as a writer, educator, and environmentalist. Born and educated in France, Dubos came to the United States in 1924 to join the research staff of Rutgers University. In 1927 he was invited to join the staff of Rockefeller University, where he spent mostrar mais practically his entire career. At Rockefeller University, Dubos pioneered research in antibiotics for commercial use during the 1940s. In 1939 he discovered tyrothricin, the first commercially produced antibiotic. As he grew older, his interests shifted from microbiology to humanistic and social-environmental issues. He devoted much of his writing to environmental problems and their impact on human beings. Dubos served as president of several professional organizations in the sciences, wrote 20 books, and was awarded more than a score of prizes by the scientific community. Para Dubo, de todos los descubrimientos médicos de la historia el más grande sea el de la teoría germinal de Pasteur. Una vez adoptada esta teoría fue posible combatir sistemáticamente las enfermedades.

Para Dubos, la aportación de Pasteur al campo de la investigación y la medicina es indiscutible. Gracias a él no solo fue posible adoptar medidas capaces de acabar con los gérmenes causantes de numerosas infecciones, sino también salvar muchas vidas, utilizando sus vacunas.

I wrote a review of this for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, but I don't want to copy it into this space.. It wasn't a great review, anyway.

El libro es una serie de conferencias publicadas en 1960 acerca de los alcances y los "no-alcances" de la ciencia, buscando hacer conciencia (jojojo) sobre el papel del científico a futuro. El hecho de que casi todas estas ideas siguen vigentes 50 años después de publicadas habla muy bien de la capacidad de visión del autor y de cuánto tenemos que recordar la sobriedad en las ciencias.
