lenny duncan writes about Black liberation through prose and poetry that reflects hip-hop music in "Psalms of my People." End notes helpfully provide context for readers unfamiliar with hip-hop or Black history. The format may be very accessible or a struggle, depending on the reader's understanding of these topics.

This book is some of everything in the best possible way. And, as advertised, prophetic.

(NB I was given a finished copy of this book by its publisher.)

They do not"prove" this by logical argument; rather, they provide example after example of lyrics that describe and clarify the truth of the life that Black Americans face.
I have made a point of listening to a sampling of these songs, from Lauryn Hill to Kendrick Lamar to the Notorious B.I.G. I am not at all qualified by my life experience to understand very much of what duncan is saying, but his book has opened my eyes to things I had never seen, and helped me to find some hip-hop music a little less opaque.… (mais)

Psalms of My People is a thought-provoking book that opens this white persons eyes. I’m given a deeper meaning and alternative view on hip hop artists and tracks, on MTV and Kurt Loder. The author is compelling and writes with refreshing candor. I read all the notes as I was reading and they all occurred where I needed them. This is a great book of poetry and prose delving into hip hop history and the life of the author.
