Wow. Overwhelming and monumental. History, musicology, and "orientalism" encrusting a story of yearning, regret, and the distance between us. I feel like it would take months to look up his references. So I didn't and just enjoyed the tale.

The story starts at the primary train station in Milan. Francis Mirkovic, a Frenchman, is halfway through a lengthy train journey from Paris to Rome after missing his morning departure. The exhausted and inebriated Mirkovic begins to consider the destination as soon as the wheels begin to move once more.

There is plenty of time for reflection with only 550 kilometers remaining, and Francis has a lot on his mind. He is departing from the French intelligence agency with a bag that will be sold in Rome so that the money from the sale may be used to start a new life. He prepares for the hours ahead while ignoring the passengers at the station. Hist thoughts are mesmerizing as they tumble forth in a narrative that is one long sentence.… (mais)
