The National Geographic Kids books are really great, and I love that they have everything from detailed encyclopedias for older kids, to simple stories for preschoolers, like this one.

I love that this book had a vocabulary tree at the beginning to help students describe how bugs look and what they have. I like that the book includes diagrams with labels pointing to the different parts of the bugs. I also like the end portion of the book where it shows the vocabulary words and asks you to point and say the different parts of the bug. I probably would not use this whole class because this is a little bit too easy of a book for whole group instruction for my students, however I think I would use it for emergent small groups because I think it's a great book to cover text features, to pull out key facts on the pages, etc. The age range for this book is 4-7 and the reading level is at a J. The DCI being explored in this book is life science because we are looking at bugs and their bodies. The CCC being explored in this book is cause and effect because the book talks about how bugs eat, using first then language.… (mais)
