This was a delightful surprise. I loved Henry Eyring's Reflections and quite enjoyed his other words/recollections contained within this book. The interwoven text by his grandson(?) could have used some work-- comparatively it had little flair. And there were several times when information was repeated which, in a book like this one, wasn't necessary.

I think I would have enjoyed it more 6 years ago. But it's a good book for High School students.

To be honest, I never meant to read it. My dad got it for Christmas and I picked it up out of sheer curiosity about his youth in the Eastern US-- it's one of my dreams to live there for at least one year. I planned to skim a chapter and set it down.

What I found was a masterpiece of formatting- yes!- and writing. It's an easy read and the format makes it easy to navigate. The type makes you feel like you're reading an old-fashioned newspaper.

I have a hard time rating biographies of people that are still living. I don't like it. It seems like I'm giving them a grade on their life. So, rather than say it was good, etc, I'll simply say that I enjoyed it and admit to skimming/skipping the latter years- mostly because that was when I came to know him and I felt it would be repetitive.

All in all, it was a unexpected, yet enjoyable, journey through the life of a man trying to do and be his best by following Christ.

Thoroughly enjoyed this biography of Henry B. Eyring. It is a very insightful look into his life and is interspersed with many of his own journal entries and drawings. It gave me a new appreciation and perspective into his life and background. I particularly came away with a deep appreciation for his humility, his willingness to see and correct flaws/mistakes, his devotion to his family, and his unwavering faith in Christ and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

If I had any slight criticism of the book (as President Eyring’s mom would offer), it would be this: because the authors present President Eyring in such a flattering light, there are times in this book that he seems less relatable. That is in direct contrast to what I have seen from his talks and interactions with others (and in our limited interactions). That issue notwithstanding, I came away from this book with greater respect, admiration, and appreciation for President Eyring. 4.5/5 stars for this one.… (mais)
