That being said, the writers and artists competing in this contest are excellent and very well done and should be supported separately from this publication. Hubbard's writing is poorly done and hard to parse.
One of the more poorly-written Star Wars novels, with execrable dialogue and characterization. For such a poorly-written novel, it is amazing it made a lasting contribution to Star Wars lore: the matriarchal society of Dathomir. I thought the Hapes society was also interesting, but Wolverton did not spend a lot of time on it, and the novel is wrapped up in a rather contrived way that I don't think Hapes had any durable legacy.

Stand out stories for me were Untrained Luck, The First Warden, The Damned Voyage, Thanatos Drive, Lost Robot, and Release from Service.
Illustrations that were my favorites included Untrained Luck, Thanatos Drive, Lost Robot, and A Certain Slant of Light. The artwork for Untrained Luck was my favorite. I loved the movement, the light and dark contrasts, and the Star Wars appeal.
I'll be keeping an eye out for some of these authors and artists now.

The specific tool I was looking for was Farland's "story puzzle" device I heard mentioned on a recent episode of the rel="nofollow" target="_top">"Writing Excuses" podcast. The way it was mentioned, I thought it might be at the very beginning and the rest of the book would just add depth. Farland knew better. He spends the first third of the book helping the reader understand how stories work, the next third sifting through the pieces needed to create a good story, and the last third offering some tools to make it happen. But still no "story puzzle".
Finally, there in the appendix "Exercises To Increase Productivity" it looks like I've found the story puzzle exercise and I will try to use it on my next book.… (mais)
