The entertaining and universal tale of a boy and his weird-looking toy he didn't ask for and wants nothing to do with (and you can see why, Koala's a bit frightening). Sean Ferrell's writing is minimal but funny paired with Charles Santoso's expressive illustrations. The ending may surprise you. The last page is my FAVORITE part!

Okay, I've been thinking about this a lot. I originally gave this one two stars but that's really not fair.

Here's the deal, there were sections of this book that were very much two stars. Continuity issues (talk to me about the damn snow), some story lines that felt left hanging or man handled, and lack of any discussion of why the world had gone to shit. Although, the feral parrots were quite cool I thought.

But, there were some story lines that were absolutely lovely and so well written that I wanted them to become the book I was reading: Lily, Phil, Emma, the moving of all the books to the new 'library system', and the painters constantly repainting the solar system on the ceiling of Grand Central Station. Those bits were lovely.

Soon he is getting busted out of prison by the crew of a ship who take him to Singe, an island filled with his dad's deluded mechanical creations. It's action packed as the robots attack the city of Liberty. Noah has to use his wits and connection with his found family to save the city. Noah reflects on his parents decisions to put his work above all else, where Noah centers people and relationships.… (mais)

I can't decide how I feel about this one -- I like the idea that everyone has bad days, and it can sometimes seem like when we are jerks, it's something outside ourselves that overwhelms us. However, I don't really think that it makes sense to teach kids that there is an outside force, and that it's not all that controllable, because ultimately they have to figure out how to deal with the snurtch, and "it's not me" isn't going to get them very far.
