There are at least some 137 men and women who have lived in North or South America who have been beatified or canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. Sixty of them were canonized and 77 beatified. Here are the inspiring stories of Kateri Tekakwitha, Junipero Serra, Elizabeth Ann Seton, John Neumann, Father Damien, Mother Cabrini, Brother Andre, and many more. This little book is a fascinating, brief introduction into the lives and struggles of these saintly men and women.

Biographical chapters on saints are interesting, but I wondered at the factual accuracy of some claims which were different than I've read elsewhere. No research citations are given and no additional sources are listed for further reading. However, the real limitation of this book is that collects stories of married saints as though this is a admirable endeavor, but repeatedly claims that the saints discussed would have been saints whether or not they were married and appears to downplay, if not outright ignore, the role of marriage in general. Two volumes of perhaps the most comprehensive, concise and detailed information on the lives of the thirty-three doctors of the Church, plus a few selected sections of their important spiritual treatises. Also gives a truly awesome representation of the great spiritual teachers of the Catholic Church.

Fink's two volume set on the Doctors of the Church, he successfully achieves his purpose by making all thirty-three doctors lives and writings known--crafted neatly in informative summaries--to the general public in understandable terms. This is a work which may be used both for personal study and devotion--another mark pointing to the sheer value and resourcefulness of this work. This set should be read by intro to Christian History/Theology students, and should be required reading for younger students in parochial school as well.… (mais)
